EUROMAT 99
represents a showcase of the competence of the European
materials societies which have established the network
MatNet in order to promote and facilitate their
communication and cooperation. They have started the
dialogue with the European Commission in order to discuss
programme goals and priorities for maintaining Europe's
global competitiveness. EUROMAT is the forum where the
MatNet goes public for the first time: FEMS
Federation
of European Materials
Societies In 1998, the
global network IOMMMS
- The International Organisation of the Materials, Metals
and Minerals Societies
- has been established between materials societies from the
major industrial countries all over the world, where FEMS
represents continental Europe. Its 1999 Annual Meeting will
be hosted by EUROMAT 99.

EUROMAT 99 is
focused to a large extent on the aims of the BRITE-EURAM
Program, with reference both to the materials related topics
of the closing 4th Framework Program of which many projects
are presented: Non-ferrous
Metals and Metals Processing Further Topics of
the 4th Framework Program are presented at the 99 Spring
meeting of the European Materials Research Society EMRS in
Strasbourg. Some of the Symposia of both events will
therefore be mutually cosponsored by EMRS and FEMS.
The structure and
the topics of the EUROMAT program point already to the more
application oriented 5th Framework Program. Equally, EUROMAT
99 offers the forum for the presentation of projects of the
European Initiatives COST and EUREKA. These Initiatives
cover all classes of materials. The dominant application
areas include: Electrical
Power Generation The
cross-sectional topics refer to: Surface
Technology
Steel Processing
Polymers and Plastics
Materials for Transportation
Materials for Energy Conversion
Biomaterials
Construction Materials
Recycling.
Information Technology
Buildings and Structures.
Tribology Engineering
Nanotechnology
