EUROMAT: The
Comprehensive Materials Event in Europe
Engineering
progress essentially depends on the availability and the
intelligent use of materials. For many key industry areas,
Europe constitutes a premier place for the development of
new materials and their applications. EUROMAT 99, the
biannual meeting of the Federation of European Materials
Societies (FEMS) with its 21 member societies across Europe,
supported by various European co-sponsoring societies and
federations, sets out to become the most comprehensive
European event to demonstrate the wide range of the
interdisciplinary performance of materials.
The conference
programme is essentially focused on applications of
materials with high innovation potential. At the same time,
fundamental approaches and processing related aspects for
unconventional materials are addressed.
EUROMAT 99
is structured into 12 major topics including 47 symposia.
The lectures - Short Papers of a duration of 20 minutes and
keynote papers of double that duration - will be offered in
14 parallel sessions, which treat a subject up to a maximum
of 2 days. Plenary sessions with lecturers highly reputed in
their field will open each day. The posters will be
presented during the 4 days of the conference and in poster
sessions on two evenings, Monday and Wednesday. The metal
related subjects preferrably have been considered for Monday
and Tuesday, whereas non-metallic subjects are offered on
Wednesday and Thursday.
Essentials
of the Programme
EUROMAT is
essentially focused on applications of materials with high
innovation potential. At the same time, fundamental
approaches and processing related aspects for unconventional
materials are addressed. EUROMAT is solution oriented.
Authors and participants look at the best solution
irrespective of materials classes or processing routes.
Consequently, in many cases, solutions can also be
demonstrated at the simultaneous exhibition
MATERIALICA.
In the frame of
the 12 conference topics, 1650 papers have been submitted
for the 47 Symposia of which 755 have been selected as a
lecture by the international group of chairpersons and will
be presented in 153 sessions. Further, the chairpersons have
proposed 65 renowned experts for keynote lectures in the
frame of their symposium. 830 papers will be displayed as
posters.
International
Contribution
The scope of
EUROMAT is truely international. Papers have been submitted
by experts from 57 countries. The host country Germany,
which has, of course, been expected to provide the majority,
just makes up one third. The major industrial countries of
the world have contributed essentially to the success of the
program, as can be seen from the list mentioned below. An
overwhelming eastern European contingent shows that there is
a strong interest of these countries for
cooperation.

Host
Country Germany - WERKSTOFFWOCHE
EUROMAT 99 is
hosted by WERKSTOFFWOCHE and Materialica. WERKSTOFFWOCHE is
a multisociety joint conference project established in
Germany. Initiators are Deutsche
Gesellschaft für Materialkunde
DGM,
Deutsche
Keramische Gesellschaft DKG
as well as Verein
Deutscher Ingenieure VDI-W
supported by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research
BMBF.
At
WERKSTOFFWOCHE
1998, with
a total of 800 papers, 500 of which were presented as a
lecture, 1900 participants were registered.
EUROMAT 99 is
structured very much like WERKSTOFFWOCHE 98. Werkstoffwoche
99 will focus on a special topic:
Materials for Adaptronic Applications
MATERIALICA
MATERIALICA,
the International Trade Fair for Innovative Materials,
Processes and Applications, reflects the topics of the
Congress. In 1998, 264 exhibitors presented key technologies
in the various application and cross-sectional fields. 5,800
visitors were attracted by new developments in materials of
all categories, in manufacturing processes, and in testing
and inspection techniques.
