Short Course 3:
High Temperature Interfacial Forces, Energies and Phenomena
(and how to apply them to understand and to control materials technologies)

10:00 Basics of interfacial science (including optimum shape and size of small phases, wettability, adsorption, segregation, surface phase separation, Marangoni convection, nucleation, etc.)
11:30 Coffee break
11:50 Interfacial forces, acting on solid particles, liquid droplets and gaseous bubbles (the general equation and discussion of 6 different forces of different origin, providing user-friendly equations).
13:10 Lunch
14:30 Interfacial energies (measurements and modeling for different combinations of two phases, including liquid metals, solid metals, molten salts and slags, ceramics with ionic bonds (such as alumina), ceramics with covalent bonds (such as silicon carbide), ceramics with metallic bonds (such as titanium carbide), and gas phase. The concentration dependence of interfacial energies will be modeled using the Butler formalism.

15:50 Interfacial phenomena (description and modeling of introduction of particles into liquid metals, coagulation of particles in liquid metals, pushing of particles by the solidification front, stabilization of metallic foams and possibly emulsions by solid particles, etc.)
