The Swiss Association for Material Sciences and Technology, the SVMT, endeavours to constantly extend its range of facilities and services for its members. We recently launched a Newsletter for our members with information on the association’s activities and news from members and affiliated firms. By introducing a “Who’s Who” member database on the SVMT Intranet last December we created a new platform of professional exchange for our members. And in September this year the SVMT created a new Metallurgy specialist group. This specialist group provides experts from industry and research with a platform for professional interchange and for setting up and maintaining networks relating to metals. The idea is to address current trends, developments and issues, and to feature and discuss them in brief presentations. The main topic of the first event in September was “Microstructure and Properties”. There were 32 conference-goers who attended this first event – an encouraging number in Swiss terms. After four specialist presentations there was enough time for lively, interesting debate. After lunch the conference-goers had the opportunity to visit the vonRoll casting (emmenbrücke) ag iron foundry. The Executive Committee’s efforts to make what the association has to offer more attractive to existing and potential members have already borne fruit. The number of SVMT members went up by an impressive 10% in 2014. The Executive Committee also plans to further expand the SVMT’s facilities and services for its members next year.
