Failure mechanisms in aluminum products

Due to limited availability of natural resources light weight design is of enormous and further increasing importance in various fields of applications as e. g. Automotive and Aircraft industry. The key to optimized lightweight structural applications is to design to the materials limit, utilizing the highest possible fraction of materials potential. Failure of components is nowadays a widely accepted part of development processes. Following this approach, failure analysis gives valuable information for both design and materials optimization. Failure of components, either from development or from serial applications, may have various reasons usually related to the material used and the corresponding manufacturing route. As structure and processing of Al Alloys strongly differs from these of other metals, the understanding of failures in Al products requires significant knowledge on failure mechanisms and structures typical for Al components. For other metals, particularly for steels, such topics are discussed and documented in various platforms. For Aluminum, however, no such platform is available in Germany yet. This gap is to be closed by the here presented DGM Workshop.

• Defect type and fracture database for Al products, to be integrated into already existing databases • Surface failures in Al products • Very high number of cycles fatigue failures • Failure of Al welding joints • Failure due to superposition of failure mechanisms • Failures due to complex loading or multi-axial loading • Failure in Al-xxx Hybrids • Creep induced failure of Al products • New methods in failure analysis and prevention • Discussion and understanding of new / not understood failure cases • Initiation of research projects on the AK`s topics and targets Its the target of the workshop to be integrated in the already existing structure of experts and institutions working on related topics. Therefore this workshop is part of and open for both DGM and VDI members, as well as for all other persons from industry and institutes interested in open, confidential and constructive work on the above topics.
