Interfaces are crucial for the interaction of materials with their environment. In the biomedical field, a comprehensive knowledge of processes at interfaces of biomaterials is essential, as it permits to avoid undesired surface-induced reactions and it supports the ingrowth of a biomaterial. The working committee “Interfaces” focuses on the influence of interface properties onto biological reactions. The combination of different analytical tools to characterize the biointerface helps to optimize the design of the biointerface at different length scales. The working committee “Interfaces” is a forum to discuss recent challenges in the field of biointerfaces in contact to a biological system from an interdisciplinary view with participation of science and industry.
• Comprehension on interactions of biological systems with materials interfaces (inflammatory reactions, interactions to proteins and cells etc.) • Investigations on near-interface modifications of implant materials (oxidation, degradation, mechanical stability, corrosion etc.) • Assessment of the impact of surface micro- and nanostructure at the interface onto the implant function • Analysis of dynamics at the interface (short, medium and long time scales) • Establishment of future key topics • Exchange of information in the frame of an interdisciplinary forum • Initiation of collaborations and joint research proposals between industry, university and non-university institutions
