Portable metallographic test procedures contribute significantly to assuring a companys large machine components quality. It is also widely used in power and chemical plants. Only by using this type of testing, it is possible to assess non-destructively, i.e. without sampling, the microstructure and identify deviations. Excluding portable microscopes with limited amplification, there are no microscopes to test large-sized components on-site in a non-destructive manner. It is frequently necessary to estimate a components structure without modifying or destroying the part, as for example, in the case of immobile components which are in constant operation, such as tubes in power plants. It may also be impossible to investigate components because they are simply too large, as in the case of e.g. large turbine blades or entire turbine housings. Finally, destruction during sampling may also be impossible due to the high cost of the component. To make these objects accessible for a metallographic investigation of the structure, quasi non-destructive test methods are needed. Portable metallography was engineered to cover this range of application. In portable metallography, which is also called component metallography, we dont use the approach of moving the sample to the lab microscope in the stationary metallography lab. By contrast, the metallographic analyses are executed directly on the object after its preparation on site. Hence grinding, polishing, and etching are performed by means of portable devices directly on the component. The microstructure is then evaluated using portable microscopes or replicas.

  • The main aim of the Technical Committee is the organisation of the yearly seminar Portable Metallography at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing in Berlin, Germany. After an almost 10-year interruption, the successful DGM seminar once held yearly in Münster was re-instated in December 2009. The new seminar features similar contents and a similar structure, but has new speakers and a new technical lead. The successful principle to teach the seminar through various teams from industry and science was left unchanged.
  • To get the right results in portable metallography, one has to know specific techniques for both preparation and evaluation of microstructures. Neither in vocational nor academic training these procedures and processes are taught. Hence they have to be learned on the job when the need arises. The seminar as well as the Technical Committee aims for contributing systematic professional help in this area.
  • The Technical Committee is also committed to supporting networking activities within the (scientific) community. Its members come from various fields in industry and science and have quite different and widespread experience from which their peers could benefit.
  • Consumable manufacturers will play an increasing role both in the Technical Committee and the seminar. Attendees and other interested parties can get professional help with their selection of just the right consumables.
  • Finally, the Technical Committee would like to contribute to the further development of technical documents and specifications related to portable metallography (e.g. VGB-TW 507), this by means of discussions and exchange of experience.
