Two awards at a distance of 6,000 kilometres, and all at the same day: even a renowned Material Scientist and Engineer seldom receives one. It happened to Prof. Dr. Frank Mücklich, DGM President: On October 16, 2018, the head of the Institute of Functional Materials at Saarland University was officially accepted as a member of the Academy of Engineering Sciences (acatech). At the same time, the world's largest specialist society for Material Science and Engineering, the American Society for Materials (ASM), appointed him a Fellow (FASM) during the Materials Science & Technology (MS&T) congress in Columbus, Ohio. The ASM justified the appointment with Mücklich's theoretical and technological achievements in the field of 3D microstructure research and surface functionalization.
At acatech, Mücklich will advise the German government on MatWerk issues and develop recommendations for policy on material issues. Mücklich intends to use his new role at the ASM, among other things, to establish and expand cooperation between the European School for Materials Research, which he founded, and US research institutions.
