Nowedays frequently asked questions are, for instance: How can we decrease the energy consumption, store or convert energy in a more efficient manner? How can we increase the ressource efficiency in transportation or in mechanical and process engineering? To answer these or similar questions: By using cellular materials! Most relevant advantages of this class of material: They are available as metals, ceramics, glasses, polymers or even composites, and, these materials might be light weight due to their adjustable porosity. In this respect an increasing number of activities in basic research, industrial developments, manufacturing and use of cellular materials was recognized at the three-days conference in Dresden, Germany.
The 4th CellMat was, as in th eyears before, organized by the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Materialkunde e.V. (DGM) in collaboration with the Otto-von-Guericke-University, Magdeburg, Germany (Conference Chair: Prof. Michael Scheffler) and Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM, Dresden, Germany (Program Chair: Dr. Olaf Andersen)
Within three parallel session experts discussed about 120 talks and numerous posters; topics were related to the manufacturing of cellular materials, their properties and characterization techniques, their wide spectrum of properties, specific problems when applied in energy conversion, prosthetics, or in transportation, and basic research was presented with a new view on the description of structure. Novel applications were introduced and the need for standardization of characterization techniques was pointed out.
International renowned experts dealt with the following topics in their presentations:
- Prof. Denis Weaire, Trinity College Dublin (Irland): A Mystery Tour through Cellular Materials
- Prof. Dr.-Ing. Volker Altstädt, Universität Bayreuth (Germany): Influence of morphological scaling effects on the mechanical properties of polymer foams
- Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Christos G. Aneziris TU Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany): Multifunctional Carbon Bonded Filters for Metal Melt Filtration
- Prof. Dr. Michael Fröba, (Universität Hamburg): Pseudomorphic transformation of controlled pore glasses into ordered nanoporous materials with hierarchical pore structures
- Prof. Yuji Iwamoto, Nagoya Institute of Technology (Japan): High-temperature hydrogen gas permeation properties of precursor-derived microporous amorphous silica-based membranes
- Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Meinert, University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz (Germany): Cellular Metals in Thermal Management Applications - Opportunities and Limitations
- Prof. Chul B. Park, University of Toronto (Canada): Fundamental mechanisms of cell nucleation in plastic foaming
- Prof. Shinsuke Suzuki, Waseda University (Japan): Recent Progress in Fabrication Techniques of Porous and Cellular Metals in Japan
Among the posters the two best ones were granted; the certificates were delivered during the conference dinner, and the handover was carried out by Dr. Guenter Stephani. Günter served for many years in the cellular metals community and he was our guest at this time of the conference.
- The first price was granted to:
Attila Szlancsik and his science colleagues B. Katona, I. Orbulov von der Budapest University of Technology and Economics (Ungarn), the work was entitled “On the elastic gradient of metal matrix syntactic foams”
- The second price as granted to:
Tisha Dixit and her science colleague I. Ghosh, both from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (Indien). Her work was presented under the title “High porosity open-cell metal foams as extended heat transfer surfaces for space radiative cooling”.
As in the years before, we had a special session during the CellMAT confernce dealing in 2016 with the topic „Active and reactive ceramic filter materials for advanced metal melt filtration“, which is sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as a Collaborative Research centre located at the Technical University „Bergakademie“ Freiberg, Germany. And we had a trade exhibition with the following companies working un the field of cellular materials:

After the conference´ second dayt there was a sightseeing tour through the historical part of Dresden by night, right when the 582nd Strietzelmarkt, Germany´s oldest Christmas market was held. and after this, during the conference dinner in a very pleasent atmosphere there was time for diversion.
The third days speciality was the lab tour to the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM; about 25 conference delegates attended this event.
