TMS-DGM Symposium on Lightweight Metals: A Joint US-European Symposium on Challenges in Light Weighting the Transportation Industry

Scope: The recent demand for lightweight metals (including aluminum and magnesium alloys) has seen historically high growth rates due in part to their role in meeting the continuously increasing requirements for improved fuel efficiency and reduced green-house gas emission for transport vehicles. In line with that, research and development efforts are leading to notable advances in these materials, their processing as well as in their application, that justify a symposium on its own.

This joint symposium between TMS and DGM (the German Materials Society) welcomes contributions relating to its title that cover – but are not limited to – sustainable use of lightweight metals in the design and tailoring of monolithic and composite cast, wrought and additive materials, as well as in the manufacturing of semi-finished and finished products. Especially welcomed are contributions with a possible scientific and technological relevance across the different material classes (e.g., DC- and twin-roll casting, rheo- and shape casting, extrusion, forging and warm forming, multi-material joining, hybrid lightweight design and performance, analytical and modeling approaches).

Because this symposium is co-sponsored by the Al and Mg committees of TMS, the papers presented will be published in their respective proceedings. For magnesium-related titles, in keeping with the long-standing tradition of presenting the most recent and highest quality work on magnesium, this symposium features a collection of manuscripts in an edited book entitled Magnesium Technology 2019. This book features the finest and latest breaking articles in magnesium research from the past year and is listed with the main indexing services including Elsevier Engineering Index and Thomas Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index, as well as published as a Google eBook online, making its articles readily searchable and available on the web and citable.

A condition of delivering an oral presentation on magnesium-related topics  is submitting a paper for inclusion in the Magnesium Technology 2019 book. Exemptions are only permissible if:

  • publishing in TMS journals, specifically Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, B, or E, IMMI, JOM or
  • other TMS sponsored journal by the same group of authors in the same year.

Exemptions will only be provided to those furnishing an AUTHORS COPY of their manuscript, letter of acceptance from the editor, or similar document illustrating that the manuscript was accepted by a TMS sponsored journal by the deadline of SEPTEMBER 10, 2018. By checking “YES, I will provide a manuscript for the proceedings for making an oral presentation” under PROCEEDINGS PARTICIPATION, you are indicating that you understand that a manuscript is required to make an oral presentation and it is your intent that this manuscript be included in the 2019 Magnesium Technology book, which includes transferring the copyright of the contents of the manuscript to TMS.

For aluminium-related presentations, the corresponding papers are planned to be featured in Light Metals.
