Friction and wear mechanisms in a tribological system are very complex and are influenced by many factors such as the loading conditions, lubrication and the environmental conditions. Among the main parameters are also the materials, coatings and the finishing process of the tribological partners. The latter aspects are in the focus of this years symposium and will be highlighted by three keynote presentations, held by Prof. Alfons Fischer, Dr. Volker Weihnacht and Dr. Lars Pastewka. Within the topical sessions „Wear resistant materials and coatings“, „Polymers and PMCs“, „Ceramics“, „Material-lubricant interactions and tribochemical effects“ and „Ultra-low friction materials“ the latest scientific findings and novel developments in the understanding of tribological materials will be presented. The historic ambiance of Ettlingen castle provides modern lecture rooms for scientific presentations as well as a very stimulative surrounding for interesting discussions before and after the talks.
For the first time an additional symposium on „winter sports Tribology“ will be held on the second day of the conference focusing on the special tribological interface between ice or snow and ski base or bobsleigh runners. The secrets to reduce the friction of the athletes equipment often decide who is the winner or loser of a sports competition. But low friction is also paramount for having a lot of fun on the slopes during winter. Therefore the symposium surely is interesting for professionals in winter sports as well as for amateurs who like to learn about the materials science of their hobby.
We are looking forward to welcoming you in Ettlingen!
Prof. Martin Dienwiebel (Friction,Wear and Wear protection) and Prof. Matthias Scherge (Winter sports tribology)
