Editorial March 2024: Introduction of the New DGM Team Member Katharina Bollmann (M.Sc.)

In March, the DGM team gained another new member. As part of the NFDI-MatWerk project, Katharina Bollmann (M.Sc.) will support the DGM in the area of community interaction. She started out in the Young-DGM Saarbrücken local group and most recently held one of the positions of Young-DGM federal spokesperson on the board from 2022 to 2023. In this editorial, we shed light on why the switch from volunteering to working full-time for the DGM was an attractive option for Katharina after her studies.

The DGM team welcomes Katharina Bollmann (M.Sc.) as new support in the NFDI-MatWerk project. Katharina joined the DGM through her involvement with the Young-DGM Saarbrücken, where she rose from the local group level to become federal spokesperson. In this article, you can find out more about her path from volunteering to full-time working for the DGM.

Joining the DGM via the Young-DGM Saarbrücken

The DGM has been with me since the second day of my studies. Back then, I was looking to interact with older students to find out more about studying Materials Science and Engineering in Saarbrücken and took part in various events. By taking on smaller tasks, I eventually became a member and local group spokesperson in Saarbrücken. This regional network quickly became more and more of a supra-regional network of young DGM students, which was also significantly influenced by DGM's management.

Supra-regional networking as federal team and federal spokesperson

The regular exchange across the boundaries of the local groups resulted in a small but robust supra-regional young talent network that still exists today. The national team was set up to support the young DGM national spokespersons. During my time on the federal team (2020/2021) and as federal spokesperson (2022/23), I helped organize in-person events such as the DGM's 2021/22 mentoring program, the 2022 young talent retreat and the 2023 young talent forum, in addition to the online lectures due to the pandemic.

Lack of young talent in the Young DGM

The challenge of recruiting new active members for the Young-DGM continues, particularly in view of declining student numbers. There is much speculation about other reasons. I wonder whether an increased need for personal freedom and a good work-life balance is leading to a reduction in the commitment that is important for organizations like ours.

From volunteering...

During my time in voluntary work, I gained a wealth of experience - far more than just a student assistant position, theses, internships and contacts throughout Germany. My studies were crucial for my theoretical training, the student assistant position at Fraunhofer for the practical application and the experience gained through and in the DGM for my personal development. I was able to get a taste of the DGM team and take a look "behind the scenes" at several conferences. The thought of leaving all this behind when I started my career was difficult for me. I am therefore very grateful to be able to continue working actively for the DGM!

... to the main office

In my new position, my main area of responsibility will be the NFDI MatWerk project. After my first meeting with the project team at All-Hands-on-Deck 2024, I am looking forward to the exciting and complex subject area due to the interdisciplinary challenges.

Dear DGM members, I look forward to working with you and my colleagues at the office. It is a great pleasure for me to meet you in person at DGM events and to talk to you!
